A beloved part of our family, Mary Ellen Pehowic, passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Monday, December 13, 2021, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA. Mary was 58 years young and recently noted, “Home is people. Not a place. If you go back there after the people are gone, then all you can see is what is not there anymore.”
Mary was born in Danville, the daughter of Mary Pehowic (nee Fenstermacher) and the late Albert Pehowic. Mary lived in Danville most of her life and was employed for 35 years providing care and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities. It was her passion to help others live a full and vibrant life. She recently retired to walk an artsy path and provide care for her grandson, Logan.
Mary spent most of her life caring and doing for others. Home is people, and she took care of hers. She was a devoted mother, a joyous Grammy, a dear sister, and a loving daughter. She was a caring colleague and friend.
We can’t go back to the place where Mary was to see her, but she will always be part of our home - the part that lives in our hearts. She will be remembered by all of us for her sense of humor and grit, her love of life, and her big, beautiful heart.
Mary’s home here in this world is still full with her mother, Mary Pehowic (nee Fenstermacher); daughter Chaya Merrell and partner Thomas Volkert and their son, Logan James Volkert; sister Susan McCormick; sister Eileen Gibson and husband, Christopher; brother, Anthony Pehowic and wife, Darlene; nephew Jeffrey McCormick, wife Kristi, and children Briana, Sydney, and Justin; nephew Christopher McCormick, wife Alicia, and children Ian, Lea, and Les; nephew, Tony Pehowic and fiancé Rhiannon Stephen; niece Rachel Gibson; niece Sarah Gibson; and niece Jennifer Pehowic Long, husband Rob, and their children CJ and Brad; niece Rebecca Hummer; and dearest friend and road trip partner, Dana Zoccola.
We are Mary’s people, and her home is not just a place, but a warm part of our hearts and memories.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Walk-Through Celebration of Mary’s life to be held Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM at
