Bessie Marie Howell, 88, of Danville, surrounded by family at home.



 
 

DANVILLE, PA ~ Bessie Marie Howell, 88, of Danville, surrounded by family at home, began her journey to be with our Heavenly Father on November 11, 2021.


Born on April 14, 1933, in Bloomsburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late John Earl Splain and Mildred Mottern Splain. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Howell Sr.


She attended Catawissa Schools where she spent most of her childhood and adolescent years. Bessie was employed several years at Maria Joseph Manor. She was most known for her public service as Manager of the Danville American Rescue for 10 years. After retiring, she volunteered, helped organize, and became Manager of the Good Samaritan when it first opened its doors at the Center Street location.


She enjoyed teaching and helping others, artwork, spending time with all of her family and had a strong passion for writing. Most of all Bessie was a loving and compassionate wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend.


She is survived by six children Cathy Steffen Farver, Herbert Steffen of Danville, Gary Steffen of Shickshinny, Roger Steffen of Catawissa, Ida Makowski of Danville, and Edward C Howell, Jr. of Danville. Also surviving are siblings Mildred Strittmatter, Lucille Splain, Frances Hack all of Danville and brother Lester Splain of Mainville.


In addition, Bessie is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great, great granddaughter.




She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Steffen Smith, brothers Donald Splain, James Splain, George Splain, Harry Splain and sisters Mary Kathryn Splain, Irene Shumaker and Betty Phillips.


A private family service will be held at the Shiloh United Church of Christ with Pastor Ruth Laudermilch officiating. Interment will follow at the Reformed Cemetery, Danville, Pa.


The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shiloh United Church of Christ, 512 Bloom Street Danville, Pa 17821


Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, 42 West Mahoning Street, Danville, Pa.
