Daniel P. Monkiewicz passed away at Emmanuel Center on Saturday, April 16, 2022. He had been a resident of the Meadows at Maria Joseph Manor in Danville PA since 2003.
He was born May 3, 1932, in Shenandoah along with his twin sister Dorothy. They were the offspring of the late Johanna and Peter Monkiewicz. His mother passed away when he and his sister were infants. His father died in a coal mine accident when they were ten years old. Dan was placed at the Hershey Industrial School (now known as the Milton Hershey School) and graduated in 1950.
Dan served in the Navy as a Parachute Rigger during the Korean War until his discharge in 1955. He then enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police in 1956 and was first assigned to the Bloomsburg Station. He was promoted in 1965 and transferred to the Philadelphia Troop, working at stations in Montgomery County until his retirement in 1987. He retired at the rank of Sergeant, supervising the criminal investigation unit his last 20 years on the job. Upon retiring he became employed by the Philadelphia Electric Company as a nuclear security analyst at the Limerick Generating Station.
He attended Temple University and Villanova University completing programs in Criminal Justice. He is a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3633 and the Bloomsburg Elks. Dan was the past president of the Perkiomen Valley Optimist Club, a council member at the Meadows, a member of FOP Lodge #37 and the Retired State Police Association of PA. He served as the secretary for the Collegeville Civil Service Commission for 11 years. He is a former member of Our Lady of Mercy Church, Slabtown.
Dan had a lifelong interest in aviation, holding a commercial pilot license and at one time owned an airplane in partnership for several years. Dan enjoyed many cross-country flights with his family and friends. He also enjoyed golfing, especially with his brother-in-law and playing poker with his friends at the Meadows.
His twin sister Dorothy preceded him in death October 2007.
Dan is survived by his wife, the former Marie L. Graboski. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in June. Also surviving is his son, Daniel A. Monkiewicz, Hagerstown MD and his wife Connie; a daughter, Diane Monkiewicz, Wellsboro PA; granddaughter Briana Monkiewicz and fiancée Bart Swierstok and grandson Christopher and wife Stephanie and a great-granddaughter, Alex Renee.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 22, 2022, at 11:00 AM with Father Ben Faneye as Celebrant. in the Chapel at Maria Joseph Manor in Danville PA. Burial will follow in the All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap, Elysburg PA. Full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard and the United States Navy Honor Guard.
