George Kent Underwood, 73, of Riverside, PA passed away, October 31, 2021


DANVILLE, PA ~ George Kent Underwood, 73, of Riverside, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 31, 2021 at Geisinger Medical Center Danville PA. He was born December 10, 1947 in Bloomsburg PA, the son of the late Arthur “Bud” and Georgianna Smith Underwood.
George graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1965 and attended Bloomsburg University. He was an Eagle Scout which is the highest achievement or rank with the Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Betty J. Weiss Underwood.
They were married June 26, 1971.
In earlier years, he worked with his grandfather at Underwood’s Greenhouses on Lightstreet Road in Bloomsburg PA. George spent many years as an independent insurance adjuster and most recently with the Erie Insurance Company as a multi-line insurance adjuster.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Danville PA where he served on the church council. His other memberships included the Lake Mokoma Association where he served on the Board; Eagles Mere Country Club, and the Eagles Mere-Laporte Lions Club.
George enjoyed bowling with many leagues including the Bloomsburg Merchants League. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to fish and hunt. His other interests included golfing and woodworking.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his great storytelling. He had a keen ability to master several games including board games, card games and chess and he was a great handyman. Most of all, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Joann Kelly and her husband Patrick of Alexandria VA; Curt Underwood and his wife Patti of Lynnfield MA and Derek Underwood and his wife Britt Ehrhardt of Mountain View CA. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Ellie, Gregory, Genevieve, Gus and Corbin, all of whom he adored.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of George’s Life on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church 215 East Market Street Danville PA with his pastor, the Reverend Trevor J. Hahn officiating. Friends will be received from 12:30 PM until 1:45 PM. Burial will be held at Mountain Ash Cemetery in Laporte PA on Friday, November 5, 2021 at 11:00 AM.
