Rae E. Leighow, 71,of Danville, PA passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 28, 2021


Rae E. Leighow, 71, of Danville, PA passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 28, 2021, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville PA. He was born November 1, 1950, in Bloomsburg, PA; the son of the late Clarence E. and Pearl Wray Leighow.
Rae graduated from Danville Area High School in 1968.
He served his country with honor in the United States Army Airborne from September of 1968 to March of 1972 in Vietnam. Rae was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant and received a Bronze Star.
He was married to his loving wife of 25 years, Nancy Vought Leighow. They were married September of 1996.
Rae was employed for 31 years by the Danville Police Department from 1973 until his retirement as Chief of Police on December 31, 2004. After his retirement he became the Montour County Auditor and worked security at Knoebel’s Amusement Resort. Rae was also a Deputy Sheriff with the Montour County Sheriff’s Office.
Rae was a member of Pine Street Lutheran Church, Danville. He was also a member of Danville American Legion Post 40, the VFW, Washies Fire Company, and Fraternal Order of Police in which he was Treasurer. Rae also belonged to The Lazy Six Hunting Camp of Shunk, PA.
He enjoyed hunting, going to baseball games, and going on cruises with Nancy. His greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his nieces and nephews.
Rae will be remembered for his very dry sense of humor, integrity, and selflessness. He was a good, honest man and a generous soul who was always willing to help when called upon. For all his years as Chief of Police, he was a great role model and mentor.
In addition to his wife, Rae is survived by one sister, Mary Sudo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Rae was preceded in death by one brother, Morris Leighow.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Rae’s life to be held Thursday, December 2, 2021, at 3:00PM at Pine Street Lutheran Church, 407 Pine Street, Danville, PA 17821 with the Pastor Timothy Sadler officiating. Friends will be received from 1:00-3:00PM at the church. Burial will be held in Fairview Cemetery, Danville, PA. Masking and social distancing.is required by the church.
The family will provide flowers.
Memorial contributions in Rae’s memory may be made to the church.
