Sister Marita Aumiller, RGS., 99, of Danville, PA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 19, 2022, at Emmanuel Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Danville, PA.
She was born November 17, 1922, in Baltimore, Maryland and baptized, Mary Rita Aumiller on November 26, 1922. Sister Marita is the daughter of the late Henry Paul Aumiller and Margaret Schwartzhaupt Aumiller.
She attended grade school and high school in Baltimore, Maryland. After years of interrupted study due to her ministry assignments, Sr. Marita graduated from Marywood College, Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1971 with a B.S. degree in Sociology and the National Catholic School of Social Work, Washington, D.C. in 1974 with an M.S.W. degree in Social Work.
Sister Marita (Mary Rita Aumiller) joined the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Baltimore, Maryland on April 19, 1942. She made her first vows on October 20, 1944, and final vows on October 20, 1947. Her great zeal for service and desire to make a difference in the lives of the young women served by her community was the driving force for her long life and varied services in Baltimore, Maryland, Batesburg, South Carolina, the District of Columbia, Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and briefly in a Shelter for victims of domestic violence in Guam.
She enjoyed baseball and was a life-long fan and enthusiastic supporter of the Baltimore Orioles. She attended many games with family and friends.
She will be remembered for her warm, outgoing personality and deep compassion for others. She said of herself, “I often suffer, much when I see others suffer unnecessarily.”
Sister Marita is survived by 10 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Harry, Leonard, and Edward.
Services and burial will be private. Flowers will be provided.
