Walter graduated from Manheim Township High School in 1968, and attended Penn State University York Campus.
Walter was a member of The Mason Contractors Association, The Masonry Heater Association, The Chimney Safety Institute of America, and The National Chimney Sweep Guild.

Edward M. Kelly and Elizabeth A. Ruth, of Bellingham, WA., and Aaron O. Kelly and Sarah J. Mercer, of Missoula, MT. He also leaves behind his former wife, Elizabeth S. Sahm of L’Isle Jourdain, France.
He is also survived by three brothers and a sister, and several nephews and nieces.
Services and burial will be privately held in Montana, at the convenience of the family.
